The French uses different words for accepting or refusing the question asked to them. The "OUI" is used to give the positive response for the positively questioned statement, which exactly means, "YES".
Eg>Vous êtes français?(Are you French?)
If you are French, then you have to say "OUI"(yes).
The "NON" is used to give the negative reponse for the positively questioned statement, which exactly means, "NO".
Eg>Vous êtes français?(Are you French?)
If you arenot French, then you have to say "NON"(no) or you can add "Je suis japonais"(I am japanese) or anything else.
The "SI" is used to give the positive reponse for the negatively questioned statement, which exactly means, "YES".
Eg>Vous n'êtes pas français?(Aren't you French?)
If you are French, then you have to say "SI", if not then just use "NON".
The interesting thing is both "OUI" and "SI" have the same meaning, the selection among them depends upon the way of the questioning and the type of the answer given.
